Na ogół przyjmuje się, że techno powstało z post-dyskotekowej muzyki house, popularnej w Detroit i Chicago, w połowie lat 80. Za poczštek techno uważa się założonš w 1984 przez grupę kilkunastoletnich, głównie czarnoskórych DJ-ów, uczšcych się w œrednich szkołach w Detroit, polowš, nielegalnš dyskotekę, pod namiotem, o nazwie "Techno City". DJ-e ci grali tam muzykę opartš na rytmach House, ale tworzonš na bazie wymyœlonych przez siebie, całkowicie syntetycznych brzmień. Dyskoteka ta zyskała szybko bardzo liczne grono stałych bywalców, którzy zaczęli się do niej przenosić z bardziej tradycyjnych dyskotek. Po osišgnięciu takiego sukcesu wielu z tych DJ-ów zaczęło jeŸdzić po całych Stanach Zjednoczonych i organizować podobne dyskoteki polowe pod innymi wielkimi miastami.
