Na ogół przyjmuje się, że techno powstało z post-dyskotekowej muzyki house, popularnej w Detroit i Chicago, w połowie lat 80. Za początek techno uważa się założoną w 1984 przez grupę kilkunastoletnich, głównie czarnoskórych DJ-ów, uczących się w średnich szkołach w Detroit, polową, nielegalną dyskotekę, pod namiotem, o nazwie "Techno City". DJ-e ci grali tam muzykę opartą na rytmach House, ale tworzoną na bazie wymyślonych przez siebie, całkowicie syntetycznych brzmień.
